2017 was a big year for Kia – one that was filled with passion, new challenges and many milestones. Riding a wave of momentum on the back of breathtaking new product launches, memorable fan interaction events and numerous awards over the course of the past twelve months, the year was one of excitement and inspiration. What’s new with Kia?
Kia started the year big – debuting the Stinger to a global audience at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in January, thereby creating international buzz. The Stinger is Kia’s very first true gran turismo, directly evolving from the GT concept showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011. The GT concept, in Peter Schreyer’s words, “was a dream project”. Six years down the road of sleepless nights and endless loops around the Nurburgring during development, what was once a dream car became Kia’s first-ever GT production car.
The fastback sport sedan delivers everything a gran turismo car should and more – muscular confidence and an eye-catching streamlined silhouette, powerful engine options, a spacious but intimate cabin and top tier safety and driving features.
Following the momentous reveal of the Stinger, the curtains drew back to reveal the Stonic compact crossover at the Kia media lounge event in Amsterdam and to the entire world at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) in September.
The Stonic is currently Kia’s most customizable vehicle to date, able to cater to the wide range of buyer needs. Styled by design centers in Europe and Korea, the Stonic features strong horizontal lines and soft, sculpted surfaces resembling the Kia Provo concept car first revealed at the Geneva Auto Show back in 2013. Inside, the car is armed with plenty of smart technology to enhance comfort and convenience while providing ample leg and head room for drivers and passengers.
Kia remained evermore passionate about sports again this year, actively participating in major sporting events around the world. We supported the Australian Open as the major sponsor for the 16th consecutive year, hosted the 2017 Kia Classic, and much more.
We also ventured on a journey to give fans, car enthusiasts and influencers a chance to get up-close-and-personal with the Stinger. We enhanced everyone’s experience through the Stinger Blind Test Drive in Mallorca, Spain, collaboration with BBC Top Gear, collaboration with GQ, and other special events. The results? Priceless.
This year also marked the 10th anniversary for Kia Buzz!
Throughout 2017, Kia’s efforts were recognized with several awards. For the sixth consecutive year, Kia was named one of the most valued brands in the world according to the 2017 Best Global Brands report by Interbrand.
Kia’s products also shared the spotlight. The Optima Sportswagon, Niro and Rio’s designs were recognized by the Red Dot Design Awards. Kia also was one of the very few brands to earn three segment wins in this year’s J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study with the Niro, Soul and Cadenza. This study evaluates and accordingly awards vehicles that satisfy new consumers’ wants and needs in a vehicle.
Additionally, the Kia Stinger is a finalist for both the 2018 European Car of the Year and North American Car of the Year awards. We hope you stay tuned to see whether the Stinger succeeds in bringing home one of both of these coveted awards.
